Yep... Part II

Taken standing in the same spot as yesterday's post, facing the downriver this time.

I've posted this for two reasons:

  • I thought it'd be a nice companion to yesterdays' shot;
  • I used it to do some testing of picture quality before and after upload.
Results of the testing: as suspected/expected, there's a very noticeable loss of colour tone; I presume due to a forced conversion of adobe RGB colourspace to sRGB. I'm sure that are very valid reasons for this, but it's irritating. As I learn more about picture processing and refinement techniques it is disappointing to have all the hard work stripped away.

In the case of this picture, there was a loss of subtle cloud detail in the sky which itself was a much more pronounced blue. Alas, it's just something we'll have to put up with... unless I eventually move on from Blogger to some other blog-hosting site with better image support.

As usual, I just have to say I love these shots...they are beautiful. Have you ever thought of making up a calendar of your shots for gifts for family and faithful neighbourhood fans? I think print shops do it. Raechel

I seem to get asked this type of question more and more often lately. It's a bit hard to answer though, as not everyone seems to understand my lack of entrepreneurial ambition...

Photography is, without a doubt, an expensive hobby and it would certainly be nice to find ways to defray the costs. However, putting together a calendar or some such takes time and costs money to print.

If one undertakes to do it for free (gifts), then it takes time away from and adds more cost to the hobby.

If one does it with the idea of making money (or at least recovering costs) then you still have the time issue and now you've introduced an element that I'm afraid would taint what I see/shoot, because now I'd shoot what I could turn into profit, rather than a much wider range of images.

For now, I'm largely content to shoot what pleases me, and to share via this blog those images that I think others might enjoy or which demonstrate some new skill I've mastered or am working at learning.

For those who faithfully leave comments, such as yourself Raechel, if you like an image a lot and would like a print, you can always drop me a private email and I'll set you up with a high-res version you can have printed for your own use.

I'll admit that I've been thinking for a while now about putting a bit of a book together, but it's a big project and I haven't completely decided to proceed with it yet. Most of the images that I'd use will have to be reprocessed for printing and I'm not sure that I want to devote that much time to this. Until now I'd just thought of printing one copy for my own use, but I suppose if anyone else is interested I might consider printing additional copies (at cost) - if I do go ahead with it. I'll post something if/when I get to that point.

Very very few people have displays that can show aRGB, so while sRGB is limiting in some ways it is the correct choice for images targeted for screen displaying. It's easy to get in trouble, though, if the work is only done in aRGB without periodic checking in sRGB - the wider aRGB gamut comes at the expense of "holes" (ie colors inside the gamut that cannot be represented).

Printing, though, is a whole 'nother issue...
