Bird of Prey
Spent a couple of hours out at the bird sanctuary at Iona Beach this afternoon (finally some decent weather!). According to one of the displays there, up to 155 different species of birds avail themselves of the comforts of the sanctuary throughout the course of the year.
This hawk was busy looking for food - during the search for which it made a very interesting drop into the pond. It held attitude and position horizontally and dropped down to the pond very much the way that a Harrier jet manages it's own vertical take-off and landing. Too bad for the hawk though, it came up with empty talons. [I did get pictures, but it was too far away to see anything of consequence.]

Chuck suggested that perhaps this might be a falcon rather than a hawk. However, in comparing pictures found on google images I'm pretty sure that it is in actuality, a hawk.
