Brown on Green

This makes two posts in a row that aren't birds. Don't expect the trend to continue...

This was an extremely aggressive butterfly: I watched it repeatedly chase away dragonflies which were quite a bit larger, and even a couple of birds (song sparrows). Not exactly sure what it was protecting, maybe it just got up on the wrong side of the bed in the morning and hadn't had any coffee yet... Whatever the reason, it's one tough little beasty!

Burnin' Up

When I was out at Boundary Bay beach almost two weeks ago I spent a little time watching this farmer burning one section of his field. It was a pretty warm day already, and this guy is riding around on the tractor amidst the smoke and additional heat from the process. Crazy.

I've processed several of the images I took of the farmer doin' his thing, treating each a little differently, but I can't seem to quite get them to look the way I want. D'oh. So you'll have to settle for this. I'm posting it as-is so that I stop spending any more time working on it!

On a Clear Day You Can See Forever

According to Google Earth, I was standing approximately 98 kilometers away from the peak of Mount Baker at Boundary Bay when I took this shot. I think there's some sort of horizon illusion that occurs that makes things look much closer. And the magnification of a high-powered zoom lens doesn't hurt either.

Oh, and Corwin, I think that this time this is a Crane, rather than a Heron. If you're still counting.

And for everyone else - it's not a bug shot! :)

Distant Tree

Okay, so this isn't a very stunning photo either... but I thought I better post something to remark on the new look for the blog. I've been wanting to get round to a re-design for a while, this week I finally had to fill some downtime from work (late-season cold) and did a little experimenting.

This isn't a final version, by any means. But I've learned quite a few little things about how to edit blogger templates, with more to go. Most specifically, I still want to modify the template so that pictures appear larger on the page (without clicking on them). I know it can be done as I've seen other blogger blogs that have done it... but I haven't been able to make sense of the code used. I also want to add in the ability to dispay/collapse the comments I write for each picture - to give more focus to the pictures. Again, I've seen the code used for this but haven't figured out just yet how to include it in my template. A work in progress...

As for this picture, it was also taken last weekend at Boundary Bay. The tree left of centre - way in the distance - is the same tree as the one with the horseback riders two posts ago. This picture shows a little better just how far away the tree actually was (okay, I was a little closer for the horseback shot). And it's sunny in this one too.

Comments - good or bad - on the new blog design are welcome! Posted by Picasa

Boundary Bay Horses

Just a quick note as computer problems have delayed getting this posted and it's now getting quite late... This was taken at Boundary Bay (south Ladner?) today, during a brief cloudy period between sunshine.

I think I'll have another shot to put up tomorrow. Posted by Picasa
