Stacked for the season?

As you can see, I processed two versions of this shot but couldn't decide which I liked better. I suppose that I ought to prefer the full-colour version as it is much more faithful to what you'd have seen if you were there when I pressed the shutter button. However, there's something in the mixed black and white with colour version that draws me, even though it's a gimmicky effect.

Location of the shot was the Deas Rowing Club, located in Deas Regional Park, which is actually quite a nifty place.

The Fading Colours of Fall

Although I said that the last post would be the only one from last Sunday's set, I felt that this one deserved posting as well, and since I don't have anything else new to post at the moment I figured why the heck not and so here it is...

I've actually been fiddling with it for much of the past week, trying a few different things. It's my impression that the eyes are still a little too much, but if I tone them down at all they pretty much drop right out. On balance, I like the shot better with the colour in the eye than not, even if I haven't managed to get it quite right. Having said that, I've done a print of this that I'm very happy with.

Learning the Art of the Portrait

For some time now I've been trying to find someone who doesn't mind having their picture taken - a harder challenge than you might think. It's the next logical step for me as I move along the road of photographic discovery. Not that I don't still enjoy landscape/nature photography, but I'm finally feeling competent enough with the fundamentals to move onwards to live human subjects.

This is Devon, the daughter of a friend. She agreed, quite readily apparently, to be the guinea pig for my further search for understanding of light, focus and shutter speed. Little did she know...

Actually, we got quite lucky today. Half an hour earlier the sun was behind some clouds and the light was horribly contrasty and white. Then it came out from behind with some wonderful soft fall colour, and we found the perfect spot with light filtering through some trees. This is probably the only shot I'll post from today, but there were a number of very good ones (in my estimation) at this same location. I'll go down in my books as a top spot, that's for sure - at least until all the leaves fall off the trees. And we won't talk about the fact that I messed up most of the later shots by making the rookie move of not paying attention to my settings... too much time spent lately taking pictures of birds on one of the more automatic camera settings. D'oh!

Half-hour to Sunset

This was taken late yesterday afternoon down at Fraser River Park. I actually processed it (along with a couple of others) last night, but as I was quite tired at the end I couldn't decide whether I was happy with the result or not.

I've decided I am, at the least, satisfied, even if some of the colours are a little off. Trade-off, I suppose for some of the other very successful results.

As I look at this shot I find it a little odd - in a shouldn't be surprised kind of way - that with all the pictures I've taken down at the park over the past three years I don't think I've ever captured this particular viewpoint before. Certainly not with this lighting and tone. Which, I suppose, is why one goes back to the same place again and again (other than it's a nice park and convenient).

As always, comments of any sort are welcome and encouraged. Well, it'd be nice if we could keep them relevant to the photo in question...

Pile of Leaves

A rather uninspiring weekend over all. But, prior to the weekend, after work on Friday night, I'd taken a few minutes to walk around the place I work to see what might be interesting... which is where this shot comes from.

I expect that I'll regret posting this picture in the end, as it's a bit gimicky. But I did spend a fair bit of time working on it as I wanted to try out the collage technique, mostly because it uses masks, which is something in Photoshop that I seem to be having trouble getting a handle on, so I guess from the time investment point-of-view it's worth posting.

Anyway, if you haven't already figured it out, it's single picture with picture frames added - if you follow the tree branches or trunks you'll see that they all line up. Normally such an image is presented on a monotone background, but I decided to leave the rest of the picture partly visible as I thought in this case it helps with the effect.

Let me know what you think - good or bad; there have been far too few comments lately. Which, I'll admist, is largely my fault as I haven't been posting regularly, but it'd be nice to know that there are still people out there.

[Note: I re-edited this image and swapped the new version in on Monday evening - I'd finally figured out why it hadn't turned out quite as sharp as I'd expected.]

Cast a Shadow

Second stop this morning was the little park at Arbutus & Marine which I drive past on the way to work each morning. With the civic strike continuing I've noticed that the dandelion crop is doing particularly well this year, and the morning light on them has had me wising I had time to stop.

The shots of the dandelions didn't really come out very well, but this High Dynamic Range (HDR) shot [5 exposures combined into 1] was okay. Note, particularly, the signs of fall already present...

Swollen River

All the rain we've been getting has really put a crimp in my desire and ability to shoot lately.
There was, however, a brief dry spell late yesterday afternoon.

I'd been out on some errands and was just headed home when things started to brighten up, so I turned left off the bridge instead of right and headed for Fraser River Park. Good timing, as there was only about 5 minutes of very, very nice light and then it was gone. If I'd tried to go anywhere else, I'd have missed it.

Today there's been no break at all in the rain, and none forcast until late tomorrow night. But I'm really going to try to get out and find something to shoot tomorrow. Really. :) Posted by Picasa

Stragglers

I haven't shot anything new all weekend. I knew that the forecast was for rain but was still confident that I'd get out and get something. When it came right down to it though, I opted to keep dry instead.

This was taken just before sunset a little earlier this week, before the rain arrived. Posted by Picasa

More Fall Colours

While there seems to be lots of general signs that it's fall, I seem to be having a bit of trouble photographing it. I think maybe it's that "fall" is just too general of a topic; I need to have some better, more complete, ideas. Hopefully I'll come up with something better soon, but in the meantime here's a picture to keep you occupied.

Fall Colour

I've moved my blog from the old Blogger to the "New Blogger in Beta" today. You might notice that it looks a little different and wonder why, so I thought that I'd mention that. Actually, now that it's past midnight I guess I should say that I made the move yesterday.

Let's hope that there are relatively few glitches in the beta edition of the new Blogger.

This shot was taken on my lunch break yesterday, as the fog rolled in and out over UBC. While I like the colours, it's really not a very impressive shot. But it's the only thing I had available and it'll do for now.

This is me trying to be less picky.Posted by Picasa
