Sunset Sunday

After taking care of some chores on Sunday I finally managed to get out with the camera in the late afternoon. Not wanting to waste the sunlight driving around looking for something to shoot I stopped off at Gladstone Park (near the south foot of Victoria street) as I hadn't been there for a while and it has some interesting vistas.

I rather like this silhouette from the rarely seen sun (good god but that was a long run of fog!). This is looking to the west at Mitchell Island - I think it's a cement plant, though I'm sure about that - with the Knight Street Bridge in the background.

I've got probably one other picture that I'll post from the outing (maybe two).

Stacked

This shot from the Ocean Cement site is a little out of sequence from what I'd had in mind, but I haven't completed processing any of the other shots from that adventure, mostly due to this insanely addictive little game I came across late last week.

I've now completed all the levels of the game and should get back to processing shortly...
In the meantime, this is a shot of the side of the building on the north side of the street, just to the right of where the Stop Pumping Immediately picture was taken. I like two things about this shot:

• First, there's something about the composition that appeals to me in an active-industry (as opposed to abandoned) kind of way;

• and secondly, it's the first time I've tried to correct perspective (it's very hard to take a hand-held shot of a building keeping the image sensor completely parallel with the building) and I'm quite happy with the result.

Hanging Light & Water Stains

Next in the series from the Ocean Cement plant.
For reasons I can't explain, I quite like this photo, even without processing. Then I processed it - by a little technique I've been developing - and was very happy with the result.
It's a pretty minimalist shot. But maybe that's what appeals to me. Let me know what you think.

Mystery Machine

I'm taking a bit of a break and not processing anything tonight, which is possible as I've got a couple of pictures (that I like, at least) already in the queue; it's just a matter of deciding which to post first.

Not sure what this machine, which no longer works as the power cable has been sheared off, was used for. It looked sort of like a rolling machine, but somehow I don't think that's quite the purpose, Maybe something to do with bending/forming re-bar to go in concrete products? Whatever it's for, I found it made an interesting subject.

On another note, Hey! I just realized that, a couple of pictures ago, I passed the 200-posts mark. Just sorta slipped by.

Stop Pumping Immediately

First of probably several images - well, it's actually a pair of images with the one below - from my slightly illicit tour of an apparently non-functioning portion of the Ocean Cement plant located just east of the south end of the Arthur Laing bridge.
I'd gone out for a walk Sunday evening, not expecting much as the light had been thoroughly uninspiring for most of the day. And indeed, initially it was pretty dismal at first. But, as I neared the plant things started to perk up.

All of the regular working areas of the plant were fenced/gated off, but the last portion to the east had no gates, and no signs prohibiting access, and no one seemed to be around...

This first pair of images was actually shot legally, from the public road, were there are buildings on both sides of the road and some sort of gantry/pipes/etc for transporting 'stuff' connecting these buildings. This shut-off station clearly refers to the material being transported, but it's not clear if it's just the materials to make concrete, or the mixed concrete itself. I'd guess, from other indications, that it was the dry cement being moved through the system, but it's just a guess.

I'm not sure how this set of pictures will go over, they're a little different from most of what I usually post, and certainly different from what I've been posting lately (no bugs!), so I'll be interested in whatever feedback anyone cares to leave.

Control Box Closeup

I'm not sure just yet how many shots will be posted from this group - I'm still going through them and processing shots. At the moment I'm pretty happy with a lot of the results, so it could be quite a few, specially since I'm working 10 of the next eleven days and won't have much time or energy to shoot anything else for a while.
